Coal is mined in the South Wales Coalfield (Rhondda Valley, and the South Wales Valleys).

Those deep valleys are mainly in Wales, in the southwest of Britain.

The main mountainous region in South Wales are The Brecon Beacons, which are a designated National Park. There are also the Black Mountains, which are closer to the border with England, and the Prescelly Mountains which tend to mark an unofficial boundary between South and Mid Wales.

The Welsh Valleys are also divided from each other by long mountain ranges.
